With so many diseases spread around the globe, we have grown accustomed to seeing all sorts of deficiencies and issues around us, but there are some diseases that you could hardly even imagine exist. While every disease is a serious thing and we should never laugh at people suffering, there are certainly some very intriguing and even mildly amusing diseases out there that will make you question what is possible and give you a pretty deep insight into how human body works.
- Epidermodysplasia Verruciformis: Tree Man Disease
Another incredible disease, the Tree Man Disease, as it was dubbed, causes people to grow warts on hands and feet that resemble that of a tree. The disease is extremely rare and it was first introduced to public as late as 2007. It was the Indonesian Dede Kosawa who was featured on Discovery Channel and his case uncovered the disease to the public, making everyone both scared and curious at the same time as the man with tree bark on his skin showed himself on TV. His warts ended up being surgically removed, but apparently never fully went away.
2. Congenital Hypertrichosis: Human Werewolf Syndrome
While werewolves may be mythological creatures, and people suffering from this disease are certainly not as dangerous as werewolves, the syndrome does make one strongly resemble the creatures of the night found in many modern movies and comics. The condition is really not dangerous at all it seems, but the exorbitant amounts of facial and body hair it causes certainly won’t make you win any beauty contests. What is more, this condition often comes in pair with a teeth defect called gingival hyperplasia. In combination, the two will cause their patient quite a bit of trouble but can be partially hidden and certainly won’t kill you.
3. Anterograde Amnesia
This rare condition usually comes as a result of a severe trauma such as brain surgery, where the brain simply becomes unable to store new data in the short term memory. While the person can still remember all the things they knew before and have a perfect understanding of the world, they will simply be unable to remember the most recent events. The condition is often compared to the age related dementia, but in reality it has nothing to do with this disease and is always caused by trauma. While some people may recover, many remain forever damaged by this devious condition.
The exact causes of Methemoglobinemia are still unknown but what we know is that it greatly inhibits the oxygen flow in our bodies and the only known health issue it causes is the blue skin color. Besides this, people suffering from this disease are pretty much as healthy as the next person. The most famous case of this disease is the Fugate family from Kentucky, who all suffer from this disease as a result of a recessive gene. Another famous blue man, dubber “Papa Smurf” was Paul Karason, but this person actually turned blue after ingesting a large amount of silver, which does not exactly relate to this disease.
This strange condition causes people to feel things that are simply not ther. The condition can affect all senses including smell and sight and about one in 27 people on the planet suffer from it. The way it works is if for instance you smell something, an image may appear to you of a related person or object that is not currently there. The condition was first documented about 200 years ago and millions of people suffer from it, but it does not really have any implications that you should be afraid of. This condition is more of a curiosity than a serious medical issue.
One of the strangest conditions on our list, Prosopagnosia makes you blind to people’s faces. In other words, while you can see perfectly in general, you will be completely unable to recognize people’s faces if you suffer from this disease. While this condition has nothing to do with eyesight, it will leave you fairly impaired as people with it cannot recognize even their own family members by face and in some cases cannot recognize people’s gender, age or even places or objects they have seen earlier. While you can certainly live with it, it will be more difficult and people will need to have a lot of understanding for a person suffering from prosopagnosia.
This strange mental disorder is actually quite beneficial in many ways. The condition causes a person to literally remember everything about every single thing that ever happened to them. People suffering from Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory can remember times and places of many things that happened to them and other details like the exact words people spoke on a certain day, at a certain time. As it is extremely rare and strange, no one yet knows how this condition develops or if it has any other health implications.
8. Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD)
While people can often suffer from sexual disorders that leave them unable to achieve sexual arousal or climax, this particular condition is quite the opposite. The condition affects mostly women and it makes them pretty much constantly sexually aroused, even when there is absolutely no sexual stimulant of any type present. The condition is extremely rare, but it can also be very unpleasant as being constantly sexually aroused and even experiencing random orgasms will certainly make life more difficult on a daily basis. This condition is considered to have nothing really do with sex or nymphomania and is a very real medical condition. Men can also suffer from it but rarely.
9. Priapism: Persistent Erection
Another seemingly sexual disease that again has nothing to really do with sex, Priapism, called after the Greek god of fertility, is a condition of persistent erection in men. While some may think this is useful, the condition is actually very painful and uncomfortable and in time will lead to tissue damage, that may lead to absolute inability to achieve an erection. Priapism usually affects men between the ages of 20 and 50 or young children between 5 and 10. This condition is serious and requires medical attention so as to avoid penis damage and permanent erectile dysfunction.
10. Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome: Accelerated Aging
One in a million people suffers from this extraordinary disease that makes you age extremely fast. Patients who suffer from Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome rarely live to see the age of 13 and most die of heart attacks and strokes doe to the extreme hardening of blood vessels caused by the disease. The first ever case that was recorded dates back to 1880 and the medical books have seen another 130 cases recorded since. This syndrome is likely a severe genetic mutation, but it has not yet been proven beyond any doubt what causes it and there is no cure for it.
