In the event that you need to improve your bust size, it might be important for you to look into the possibility of augmenting your breasts. This is a procedure that has been carried out in the past by so many people, and the success rates for breast augmentation before and after are amazing.
Perhaps the most popular type of breast augmentation are the saline implants. In as much as saline implants are common in the US, they are unfortunately not so common all over the world. Their popularity in the US is as a result of the regulations in place about them with regard to the suspicions on them and health risks that users can be exposed to.
The popularity of surgical breast augmentation is therefore as a result of the legal implications, and perhaps not the use.
Outside the US, silicone breast augmentation is the most popular with a lot of users. There are so many reasons that make this happen. One of the main reasons for the popularity of these implants is that they have a far longer lifespan as compared to saline implants. Apart from that, silicone implants when compared to the saline implants, usually give the user a better look and actually feel much better too. It is highly unlikely that you will have any negative outcomes when using silicone implants. Some of the negatives that have been associated with other types of implants before include a rippling effect or movement in the breast, but with the silicone implants, you will not experience this at all.
It is important for anyone who is considering a breast cosmetic surgery to have a lengthy talk with their physician for advice on breast augmentation before and after you take this up. This is with reference to the fact that it is a life changing procedure and you will have to live with the consequences if any.
Preparing for breast augmentation
Preparation for surgical breast augmentation is not just about the procedure, you also have to be psychologically ready for the undertaking. You should learn about different aspects that will take place after the recovery phase, and if possible, have someone who will be there with you during the first 24 hours or so, after the operation.
2 weeks before
During this time, you should stop taking any blood thinner medication or supplements. If you are a smoker, stop smoking, because having even one cigarette could, in fact, have adverse effects on the outcome of your surgery.
Nicotine and carbon monoxide in cigarettes will usually slow down the healing process and besides, make you even more vulnerable to infection, a breakdown of wounds and cause other complications for breast augmentation before and after surgery is done.
If possible, you should have all the blood tests necessary done during this time, and have them sent to your surgeon.
One day before
Have some loose clothing ready that you will change into after surgery. There is no need for you to bring a bra; you will be given a surgical bra for use.
Keep taking any medication that has been prescribed to you by your surgeon, apart from blood thinners. If you are unsure about anything, talk to your nurses.
Do not drink or eat anything after midnight on the day of surgery, not even water. Before surgery, you should not have anything in your stomach.
The day of surgery
Take a shower. Use basic soap and water; you do not need to use shampoo or any special cleansing soap.
Shave your armpits and make sure you do not use any body lotion, deodorant or antiperspirant. Brush your teeth, but do not drink water. The only water you may drink are sips of water that you will take with medication.
If you are diabetic, you should not be taking your medicine at this point. Blood pressure medicine, on the other hand, should be taken as per the prescription.
It is always a good thing to arrive at the surgical facility at least two hours before surgical breast augmentation so that the nurses can check you in, and prepare you for the procedures that will follow. One thing that you need to do, however, is making sure you take the day off. Even if your surgery is planned for the afternoon, do not schedule other activities for the morning. Just take the day to rest.
Care after augmentation
Following successful surgery, the recovery period for breast augmentation before and after is the most important phase during which your body will heal and the implants will settle into your body, assuming the desired shape and position. Make sure you follow all the guidelines as per the instructions and attend all the follow-up sessions scheduled for you.
During this time, your body and breasts are in the most delicate phase, and anything out of the ordinary could seriously affect the results.
After the surgery, the following are some of the things that you can resume:
- Eat any foods you usually consume
- Take alcoholic beverages (once you are through with pain medicine)
- Lie on your back while sleeping
- Resume non-active office work
- Raise your arm to shoulder level within 2 weeks
- Lift items no more than 5 pounds during the first 2 weeks
- Breast massage as per the surgeon’s instructions
*If you had a breast lift performed at the same time with the augmentation, you should not massage your breasts.
The following are some of the stuff that you should not do after augmentation
You must not sleep on your sides or stomach for at least 6 weeks, or up to that time prescribed by your doctor.
You should not perform any activity that is vigorous in nature, or anything that will make your breasts bounce, such as running and jumping. This will easily dislodge the implants, or break the wounds open.
Do not make the mistake of looking at the scars, or lifting your arm to look at the armpit scars. This will also break open your wounds.
You must not lift your arms above your shoulders, particularly if you had an armpit wound from the surgery performed.
You must not take a bath for the first two weeks. You can, however, shower after a few days. While showering, however, try and ensure you keep your wounds and dressing dry.
During the first 5 days of surgery, make sure you do not get your wounds wet for any reason. Most doctors will, in fact, apply a waterproof bandage to keep the scars safe. If you are not so sure, you can confirm with them. Do not remove the compression bands or surgical bra until the doctor advises you it is safe to do so.
For the first 6 weeks after surgical breast augmentation, you should not put on an underwire bra or a push-up bra, at least until your wounds have healed properly, and your implants are properly settled.
Remember that if you decide not to follow any of the post-operation augmentation protocols as recommended by your doctor, the facility will not be held responsible for any complications or problems that you incur after that.
